What is Hemp?
Hemp is a specific type of Cannabis sativa grown for hundreds of years. Hemp can be used to make rope, clothes, sails, food, and much more. Industrial hemp has an equally long history in the United States – Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the country, grew it himself.
Hemp like marijuana contains hundreds of molecules known as cannabinoids. Two of the major cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but there are many others. The main difference between hemp and marijuana is how much THC they contain. THC is responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive effects. To be legally classified as hemp, the plant must contain less than 0.3% delta-9 THC. Hemp is rich in CBD, other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, which have lots of therapeutic benefits.
